1 Minute

Lucy Solberg calmly surveyed the patients in front of her. Everyone secretly knows what their own physical perfection means, Lucy mused, as she repeatedly mulled over her plan in her head.

It was nighttime at the St. Regis hospital, located just outside Portland, Oregon, and things were relatively quiet, at least in the ER. Lucy stood in front of a row of five patients, each hooked up to various machines and tubes, all blinking and whirring with soft rhythm as the patients slumbered. Another row of patients lay behind her, and occasionally Paul would walk through, checking the machines and glancing at the softly glowing screens.

Lucy looked out of place in the hospital, with her long black hair and custom-fitted blue jumpsuit. Not even twenty years old yet, she had a sharp, striking beauty about her that was attractive by almost any standard. Paul, a young orderly, walked up to her and navigated around her, all without looking up from the chart he was carrying.

Lucy preferred to be unseen.

She knew the orderly’s name was Paul because up until a few weeks ago, Lucy was employed as a nurse at St. Regis, although her last day wasn’t exactly clear. After watching Dr. Parker perform one of his first magic surgeries, she was confident she wasn’t needed there anymore.

Dr. Parker, according to the rest of the nurses, was the lord savior Jesus Christ. He was able to single-handedly resolve any trauma case that came through the door. Lucy had watched him perform entire operations by himself in a matter of seconds. The scalpel flew through the patient’s flesh, followed immediately by the airborne suture. Suction obeyed Dr. Parker’s every glance, but it was hardly needed because the patient was sewn up in an instant before even having a chance to bleed.

Doctor Freaking Parker, Lucy thought to herself. Lucy closed her eyes and suppressed her distaste for him, which was at least somewhat due to her general feeling of disgust towards doctors. Naturally, Dr. Parker accepted the role of the savior. What an ass. She was going to enjoy putting him out of a job.

It was 10:31 p.m.

About ten feet from Lucy, Paul dropped his hands down from his chart, but the chart stayed in place, as if suspended by a magician’s wire. Paul’s confused “what the-” was cut off by Mr. Highgrove’s sudden thrashing as his intubation tube was launched from his throat by an unknown force.

“Oh shit,” whispered Lucy.

Paul’s chart crashed to the floor, startling Paul, pulling his attention away from Mr. Highgrove, all while the rest of the ER patients begin stirring and ejecting the various machines and needles plugged into their bodies.

Someone’s bed fell over. A scream and a crash echoed from the hallway.

“Everyone can do it.” These words were clear. This was now a fact. There was more there that made less sense. Something about a Tesla? Lucy didn’t have time for that.

“I guess it’s now or never,” sighed Lucy.

Lucy crouched down and moved her arms and hands as if she were grasping a volleyball tightly near her chest.
